Negreanu's Turn To Hit a Nine as He Busts Cheong

Level 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Last night, before Daniel Negreanu busted out of the 10,000 Main Event final table in fourth place, he took a big beat against fellow Team PokerStars Pro Johnny Lodden. After the money went in preflop, Lodden's pocket nines spiked a set to crack Negreanu's two queens. From there, Negreanu just couldn't recover.

This time, Negreanu was the one with two nines cracking an overpair, so one could probably say, what goes around comes around.

From the hijack seat, Joseph Cheong raised to 4,000. Mikhail Smirnov called in the cutoff seat, then Negreanu three-bet to 15,500 from the small blind. This was the second hand in a row that Cheong had opened, Smirnov flatted behind and Negreanu three-bet from one of the blinds. Cheong moved all in for 51,000, and Smirnov folded. Negreanu made the call.

Negreanu was behind at the start with the {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} to Cheong's {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}, but the {9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop put "Kid Poker" in front. The turn was the {4-Spades} and the river the {2-Hearts}, giving Negreanu the win and sending Cheong to the rail.
