The underwater poker game.

Remember back in 2005 when the Interpoker.com Extreme Poker event featured the first-ever underwater poker tournament? Well, neither do we, but it happened 30 feet below the sea of St. Kitts. Whats more, well-known poker pro Juha Helppi won the event after defeating the likes of Phil Laak and Kenna James. Unfortunately for them, it looks like some others beat them to the punch more than a half century ago.

According to the Huffington Post, a photo has been unearthed that shows an underwater poker game, or at least the appearance of one, from way back in 1951. The photo was taken in Weeki Wachee Springs, Fla., and features Dick and Shirley Woolery, Bud and Patsie Boyett, and Rudy and Thelma Halabuck.

The photo seems to be a hit on the web with various users chiming in:

  • Why cant the ladies play Cblumand
  • Very creative. I bet they had to tape or glue the cards to the table to keep them from floating away. CCaroleeena
  • That must have been a very high end camera for back then, too. CChanna

Anyway, it's just a little piece of poker history we thought we'd share. Have any water-related poker photos of your own? Feel free to Tweet them at us @PokerNews.
