World Series of Poker - Day Four Report
Well, so much for the pros being lost in the shuffle of this gigantic field. Of the nine players making this final table, four are well known players, and top professionals.
Allen Cunningham is the chip leader of Event # 2 of the WSOP as we go to the TV table, which will resume play at 2pm today. Other top pros who will be a factor in this final table include Scott Fischman, who comes in right on Cunningham's heels, only 21,000 chips behind. This final table should make for good TV if for one word only - Devilfish. Yes, Dave 'Devilfish' Ulliott is going to be on ESPN, and teach us yanks a thing or two about cracking wise at a poker table while playing some pretty darn good poker. Devilfish comes in sixth in chips, and comes in with only about 15 big blinds in his stack, so he will have to make a move some time early in today's play. Also at this final table is Can Kim Hua, who has two WPT final tables under his belt, and currently ranked 33rd in the player of the year race.
The fact that this event was extended from a two day to a three day event wound up being a real help to these final table players. Play actually ended about 11pm last night, allowing the players to get some rest before playing for $725,000 and the highest honor in poker - a WSOP gold bracelet. This is in stark contrast to the Pot Limit Event, where play ended at about 3:15 am, and 36 players are going to have to come back at noon today to play the tourney out to its conclusion. Due to the Event # 2 field being so huge, the Pot Limit Hold Em event (Event # 3) was struck from the ESPN TV schedule, so it really doesn't matter when they start the final table, as long as they finish tonight.
A great story that fell just short of being on ESPN was Travis Green. Oh, Travis has already been on ESPN a bunch, because he plays hockey for the Boston Bruins (at least he did, before the lockout, or is it a strike?), and has been in the NHL for a number of years. Travis managed to wade his way through the field of 2,305 entrants...only to finish 12th, and miss the TV by three places. Something tells me this ESPN appearance would have been Travis' favorite one ever.
As with any tournament, there was a 'bubble boy', and today's bubble boy was Jerry Flynn. When Jerry moved in from the small blind with AJ of hearts, and was called by CK Hua with pocket queens, Jerry knew he needed help to be on TV. When a queen hit the board on the flop, and the board paired on the turn, Jerry knew it was not meant to be, and we were down to our TV nine.
The final table looks like this.

Scott Fischman $707,000
