BBC Investigates

This past weekend, the BBC featured an investigation of online poker and the recent Chinese collusion scandal on PokerStars. Tom Broadbent, one of the players affected by the collusion, was interviewed and said he recently went to Beijing to report the incident to the police in an effort to get the cheaters prosecuted. This report isn't just on PokerStars, it looks into the world of cheating in online poker, as well as security and regulatory authorities.

Aaron Todd from the Casino City Times was also interviewed on the subject and said, "There are varying degrees to which collusion happens but it is pretty easy to figure out when it's going on, and it's not extremely common. The vast majority of games, at least 95% and probably more, are completely above board."

"Cheating can happen in live poker, too, but the one advantage that you have if you play online is that the sites keep track of every single poker hand played, so it's easy to go back and investigate," he said.

Silver Star

A total of 590 players competed for the PokerStars UK & Ireland Poker Tour Dublin title at the Burlington Hotel last week, but as always, only one will come out on top. Max Silver bested the field to take home the title and the 72,000 first-place prize.

The final table bust-outs started out fast with the first four players dusted within 30 minutes of each other. The action slowed down a bit after they were down to four players. "It didn't sink in that I could actually win it until it got down to the final four," Silver said after winning.

UKIPT Dublin Results

2. Ronan Gilligan - 43,400
3. Tom Kitt - 26,400

On the Up

According to the market research group Nielsen, Britain has seen a 40 percent rise in internet gambling over the past year.

"While the phenomenal growth in gambling sites over the last two years has been driven by men and women of all ages, it appears to be powered particularly by middle-aged men, the well-educated and high-earning households," Nielsen's Neil Beston said.

The reports say that an additional 3.2 million people logged on to gambling websites last year, compared to the 2.2 million who accessed social networking sites like Facebook, etc. Which reminds us, this is our Facebook and this is our Twitter. Go "like" and "follow" us.

Of the online gambling sites, poker sites were very successful, with PartyPoker seeing a 174 percent increase from last year. Also something to note, 46 percent of visitors to online gambling sites are women.
