WSOP What To Watch For: Terrence Chan Looks to Strike Gold; Shulmans' Quest for History
Two more events reached Day 3 on Sunday night at the 2012 World Series of Poker. Both Event #19: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em and Event #20: $5,000 Limit Hold'em have under 20 players remaining heading into the third of final day, which makes these events the focus of this edition of the PokerNews What To Watch For.
Event #19: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em
Peters Goes for Gold
David Peters is one of the young superstars of poker, but he tends to fly under the radar. Here at PokerNews, we tend to be statistical geeks and we can tell you that Peters has plenty of live tournament accolades to his credit. We can also tell you that he doesn't have a WSOP gold bracelet. The closest he's come to winning the most coveted prize in all of poker came in 2010 when he finished second in a $1,000 no-limit hold'em event.
With 17 WSOP cashes on record, Peters has made two WSOP final tables. He's awfully close to making his third, but the final table isn't what he's chasing. Peters will be looking for redemption after finishing second to Marcel Vonk in 2010 and hope to win a bracelet of his own.
Event 20: $5,000 Limit Hold'em
Will Chan Win at His Best Game?
Often revered as the best limit hold'em player in the world, Terrence Chan finds himself second in chips of the final 17 players in Event 20. Chan has never won a WSOP gold bracelet, but he has come close many times. On his record, Chan has a second, a third and two eighth-place finishes. He's also quietly performing extremely well at this year's WSOP.
In 2012 alone, there have been 21 events to hit the money and Chan has cashed in six of them. That's right, six. His best result was a 26th-place run in Event 11: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha, but he has topped that, with his effort thus far in Event #19.
Shulman Father-Son Combo Looks for Double Gold
There's a Shulman left in both Event #19 and Event #20. In Event #19, it's Barry Shulman and in Event #20, it's Jeff Shulman. While father Barry has two WSOP gold bracelets to his name and is chasing a third, son Jeff has none, but will be looking for his first. If they're both able to win the gold in their respective events, they'll join the company of Doyle Brunson and Todd Brunson for a father-son combo to both win bracelets in the same year (The Brunsons did it in 2005).
