GPI Player of the Year: Paul Volpe Leads; Top 100 Remains Unchanged 0001

The 2013 Global Poker Index Player of the Year race showed no major change over the last week. The top 100 players stayed put, with Paul Volpe leading the way for a third straight week. Volpe, who made back-to-back World Poker Tour final tables earlier in the year, holds a slight edge over Mike Watson, who has five top-three finishes in 2013.

Ana Marquez remains the only woman in the top 10 of the GPI Player of the Year race. Marquez has four five-figure scores in 2013, including a sixth-place finish in a $2,500 Venetian Deep Stack event ($28,405), a third-place finish in a $5,100 side event at the L.A. Poker Classic ($55,000), and a 20th-place finish in the LAPC Main Event ($43,180).

Young Ole Schemion remains in 12th place in the GPI Player of the Year race, thanks to a hot start in January. Schemion made two final tables at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, including a fourth-place finish in the $25,000 High Roller ($354,860) and a fifth-place finish in the $10,000 Six Max ($55,480).

Fellow German Christopher Frank is one spot above Schemion. Frank won a $2,000 side event at the PCA ($55,720), finished sixth in the EPT London Main Event ($168,540), and then fifth in a 2,000 side event at EPT London ($12,671).

Dan Smith, the 2012 GPI Player of the Year, is not among the top 100 players, but runner-up Marvin Rettenmeier is currently sitting in 48th. Rettenmeier finished third in the WPT Baden Main Event ($59,943), and third in 2,000 side event at EPT London ($12,340).
