Kyle Julius, who is a member of the Season XII Ones to Watch, won a nice sized pot off of Taylor Paur during Level 6. With the blinds at 200/400/50, Julius opened to 900 from early position, Amnon Filippi called in the hijack seat, and Paur defended his big blind. Paur checked to Julius on a flop of 9?4?3?, and he bet 1,300. Only Paur called. Paur check-called a bet of 3,300 when the 6? turned, and a third bet of 10,800 when the 6? completed the board, then mucked when Julius showed 5?2? for a turned straight.
Fellow Ones to Watch member Ebony Kenney also bagged a big stack. During the last level of play, her aces held up against an opponent's pocket kings preflop, and Kenny finished the second flight with 79,000 chips.
Also surviving the day were notables Owen Crowe, Adam Geyer, Jeff Madsen, Isaac Hagerling, Phil Laak, Jeremy Ausmus, Jared Hamby, and Will Failla.
Among the players who were unable to survive the day were David "Doc" Sands, Mimi Tran, Shane Schleger, Michael Katz, and November Niner Ryan Riess. Riess tweeted that he "leveled himself" into calling an all-in bet on the river against an opponent who flopped a set. Riess plans to fire one last bullet on Saturday.
Day 1b attracted 199 players, creating a total field size of 341. If you add the 84 survivors from the second flight with the 54 who survived the first, then you have at least 138 players moving on to Day 2 thus far.
Day 1c action will begin on Saturday at 1 p.m. PDT, and PokerNews will bring you a recap of the event the following day, just like we do for every other WPT event.
