Greg Merson Departs from Ivey Poker
Greg Merson, 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event champion and two-time WSOP gold bracelet winner, has departed from Ivey Poker after becoming a charter member of Team Ivey.
Merson saw a quick rise to poker stardom after his 2012 WSOP. Not only did he win two gold bracelets for nearly $9.7 million in combined prize money, but Merson also finished 21st in Event #23: $3,000 Six-Handed No-Limit Hold'em for $16,850 and fifth in Event #28: $2,500 Four-Handed No-Limit Hold'em for $70,280.
The following year, Merson finished 167th from a field of 6,352 players in his Main Event title defense, earning $42,990.
Merson's story is certainly of the feel-good variety. He beat a drug addiction, stopped smoking, battled through losing his job due to the effects of Black Friday, and climbed to the top of the poker world.
Since topping the greatest event in the game, Merson has been an excellent ambassador for poker in both cash games and tournaments the latter of which he's vowed to play much more of as of late. Already in 2014, Merson has won over $1 million, thanks large in part to a $948,996 score from the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $25,500 High Roller where he placed second.
With three cashes already at this year's WSOP, including two top-15 finishes, and a bigger schedule of events planned throughout, big things could very well be on the horizon for Merson. One of the upcoming events he plans to play is the WSOP's $1 million buy-in Big One for One Drop.
