Poker players in New Jersey turned out in big numbers this weekend, with just about every major tournament with at least a $10,000 prize pool shattering its advertised guarantee for the first time in recent memory. Chances are it was because many players returned after an action-packed summer at the 2015 World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.
New Jersey's "Donate_here" scored this week's biggest prize in the Garden State, winning the partypoker NJ/BorgataPoker.com $50,000 Guarantee for $10,064. With 272 runners generating a $50,320 prize pool, it marked the first time this summer the tournament exceeded the guaranteed prize pool. Nick "Nickyben" Bencivengo was the runner-up in the tournament, taking home $6,627 for his efforts.
In the WSOP.com/888poker NJ Sunday $30,000 Guarantee, it was "xtermine" winning big by shipping the top prize of $9,890. Earlier this summer, the tournament boasted a $35,000 guaranteed prize pool, and if that was still the case it'd have passed that too as 198 entrants shelled out $200 to generate a healthy $36,630 prize pool. Sean "ricecakes124" Rice took home $5,769 for finishing in second place.
Meanwhile, the The Big Sunday on 888poker was the only tournament that featured at least a $10,000 prize pool that did not meet its advertised guarantee this past weekend. The tournament was still a success in some ways with 50 players ponying up the $200 entry fee - far more than the usual 30-something entrants we have grown accustomed to during almost the entire summer. "Gresmaul", otherwise known as "Mergulas" on PocketFives where he has previously been ranked in the #1 spot in New Jersey (currently #3), won the $3,200 top prize in the tournament after beating "AvadaKedavra" in heads-up play.
