The 2015 World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) on PokerStars �� a 70-event poker festival featuring a mouth-watering $45 million in guaranteed prize pools �� is wrapping up with 67 events in the books and the three other events beginning their second day.
A little more than a week ago, American poker refugee Shaun "shaundeeb" Deebbroke a record by winning his eighth "COOP" championship after shipping the WCOOP-44: $215 NL Hold'em [4-Max], $400K Guaranteed for $68,000. PokerStars COOP titles include wins in online poker's three biggest festivals: WCOOP, the Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP), and Turbo Championship of Online Poker (TCOOP).
Deeb wasn't able to hold the record to himself for long as Calvin "cal42688" Anderson tied it by winning his eighth COOP title after shipping the WCOOP-62: $320 PL Omaha H/L [6-Max], $100K Guaranteed for $36,020. Along with two WCOOP titles, Anderson has also won an astounding six different SCOOP events.
The record for the most WCOOP titles, which is with held by Dan "djk123" Kelly with four, appears to be safe this year. There are a number of players tied with three WCOOP titles, including Deeb, Anders "Donald" Berg, Ryan "g0lfa" D'Angelo, and Mikal "mikal12345" Blomlie. However, unless one of them ships one of the remaining three events, they will have to wait until next year to chase down Kelly.
Norway's "EspensasApart" holds the WCOOP Main Event chip lead with 246 players remaining.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom's "easylimp" joined those with multiple COOP titles by winning his second after shipping the WCOOP-58: $530 NL Hold'em [Ultra-Deep], $150K Guaranteed for $81,598 as part of a three-way deal on the final table. Also scoring big in this tournament was Argentina's "St��mpper88" snagging $69,896 for second place, and Ireland's "whiteser" taking home $78,869 for third place.
In other news, Kyle "KJulius10" Julius won his first COOP title, shipping the WCOOP-63: $1,050 FL Hold'em Championship [6-Max], $100K Guaranteed for $36,720. Julius is no stranger to big scores in big events, previously winning the PokerStars Sunday Million on Feb. 12, 2012 for $177,392, which came after winning a cool $1.5 million from a runner-up performance in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) Main Event a few weeks earlier.
Hungary's "omaha4rollz" also had a big day on the way to claiming his first COOP title in the WCOOP-60: $2,100 NL Hold'em [Progressive Super-Knockout, Thursday Thrill SE], $1.5M Guaranteed for $212,557 + $78,945 in bounties. Well-known Romanian poker player Vlad "dariepoker" Darie finished in second place in that tournament, banking $154,432 + $24,273 in bounties.
Thus far, Germany's "tobi123456"holds the honor of winning the biggest amount in the 2015 WCOOP after winning the WCOOP-25: $10,300 NL Hold'em (8-Max, Optional Re-Entry, High-Roller), $2M Guaranteed for $654,000. However, it's expected that even if a deal is reached in the three-day $5,200 buy-in WCOOP Main Event, which includes on Tuesday, that one or more players will eclipse this amount.
The WCOOP Main Event attracted 1,995 players, with buy-ins barely coming short of covering the $10 million guarantee. Barring any deal on the final table, first place is scheduled to pay $1,760,500 with the second place finisher slated to win $1,210,000. With one day in the books and just 246 players remaining in this tournament, Norway's "EspensasApart" holds the chip lead with 1,402,825 chips with blinds at 6,250/12,500 when play resumes.
