888 Hand of the Week: Reversal of Fortune in the Millionaire Maker

The 2016 World Series of Poker continued in Las Vegas, Nevada this week, with the one of the summer's biggest events playing out.

PokerNews was on hand for all the action in the 2016 WSOP $1,500 Millionaire Maker, and will be in Las Vegas for the duration of the World Series. As a part of our coverage, that is brought to you by 888poker, we will be bringing readers a special "888 Hand of the Week" every week throughout the entire 2016 WSOP.

This time around were going to focus on a hand late on Day 3 of the Millionaire Maker that changed the fortunes of two women deep in the tournament.

888poker Ambassador Sofia Lovgren had just doubled up to a spot among the leaders when they redrew for seats at the final two tables.

Vancouver, Washington kindergarten teacher Lisa Meredith, playing in her first-ever WSOP event, moved all in from the cutoff for her last 1.1 million.

Lovgren looked down at the 8?8? in the big blind, and with over 3 million in her stack, made the call.

Meredith had the Q?J? and Lovgren held the lead through the 4?4?3? flop and 6? turn. Then suddenly, the poker gods gifted Meredith the J? on the river, giving her the bigger pair, her tournament life back, and the pot.

Lovgren took the hit, and rallied to bag a still threatening stack heading into the event's final day when play wrapped soon after. Ultimately, she finished 12th for $75,109, and may look back at this hand as a pivotal spot where, had the eights held, she would have likely gone into Day 4 as one of the leaders.

Of course, Meredith's story was of the Cinderella variety, and she came from being one card from going out of the tournament in this hand, all the way to third place and a $500,000 payday.

The timely double up that ultimately led to a reversal of fortune for both these players made this hand from the 2016 WSOP Millionaire Maker an obvious choice for this week's "888 Hand of the Week".
