Global Poker Index: Nick Petrangelo Takes POY Lead, Still Tops Overall

Breaking news �� there's been a change at the top in the 2017 Global Poker Index Player of the Year race. Nick Petrangelo has inched up into the No. 1 spot, wrestling away the lead Bryn Kenney had enjoyed for the previous 21 weeks in a row.
Petrangelo started the summer by cashing in the $111,111 High Roller for One Drop at the 2017 World Series of Poker, and with another recent cash in a Deepstack Extravaganza event at the Venetian he earned more points to edge ahead of Kenney.
Sergio Aido (No. 3) and Koray Aldemir (No. 4) likewise swapped spots in the POY standings this week, as did Ari Engel (No. 5) and David Peters (No. 6), while Dario Sammartino �� who took third in that High Roller for One Drop won by Doug Polk �� moved up from No. 12 to No. 8 after picking up his sixth cash of the WSOP.
Also new to the POY Top 10 this week is Pete Chen who jumped from No. 21 to No. 9 after a runner-up finish in Event #56: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em won by Andres Korn.

Petrangelo also maintains his lead in the overall rankings this week, the 14th in a row he has been at No. 1.
Ari Engel moved from No. 5 to No. 3 this week, matching his career-high GPI ranking achieved once before in January of this year.
There were other small shuffles up and down the Top 10, with 2015 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Joe McKeehen moving up a spot to join the list at No. 10 �� also his highest career GPI ranking. McKeehen has six cashes at the 2017 WSOP, including a victory in the Event #38: $10,000 Limit Hold'em Championship for which he collected his second career WSOP bracelet.

Meanwhile there was a lot of turnover in the lower half of the GPI Top 300 since the last update with 24 new players joining the list.
Tobias Peters is the highest-ranked of the newcomers after moving up from No. 304 to No. 156. Peters collected a couple of cashes during the last week at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, including a fourth-place finish in Event #50: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em BOUNTY won by Chris Bolek.
Scott Clements also managed a fourth-place finish in the Event #54: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship won by Tommy Le, helping him make a big move up from No. 622 to No. 188.

That move made Clements the biggest gainer for the week among players in the GPI Top 300. Next on this list is Andres Korn who went from No. 543 to No. 218 following his big win in the aforementioned Event #56: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em.
Another bracelet winner making a big gain this week was Jens Lakemeier, winner of Event #59: $2,500 Big Bet Mix. Last week Lakemeier was one spot ahead of Korn at No. 542, but now is up to No. 268

Finally, considering only players in the current GPI Top 300, Shaun Deeb slipped the furthest since the last update after going from No. 138 to No. 232.
Daniel Negreanu also had past results affected by the Aging Factor (the usual culprit when it comes to dropping in the rankings), though he looks to rebound quickly next week as he currently is the chip leader with just six players left in the Event #62: $50,000 Poker Players Championship that concludes today.
