Global Poker Index: Nick Petrangelo Tops Rankings for 20th Straight Week

Each week, the Global Poker Index releases a list of the top tournament poker players in the world using a formula that takes into account a player's results over six half-year periods. For a look at the entire list, visit the official GPI website. Here's a look at the rankings as of August 16.

2017 GPI Player of the Year

Time again for our weekly look-in to see what's happening on both the 2017 Global Poker Index Player of the Year rankings and GPI's overall global rankings.

Dario Sammartino remains the leader in the POY race. He claimed the top spot near the end of the 2017 World Series of Poker and has now held it for five weeks running. Nick Petrangelo, the man from whom Sammartino seized the lead, remains close behind at No. 2

Ari Engel nudged up one spot to No. 7 after notching yet another tournament cash, this one coming in the 2017 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open Championship won by Martin Kozlov.

Also of note, Anthony Spinella made the final two tables of the $25K High Roller at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open won by John Andress, enabling him to jump up from No. 15 to No. 9 in the POY standings this week.

GPI 300 Top 10

Meanwhile Petrangelo stays in front in the overall GPI rankings, making it 20 weeks in a row for him at No. 1.

Small shuffling down below in the Top 10 saw Sergio Aido drop out (falling from No. 8 to No. 13) and others move up, including former No. 1 Fedor Holz who inches back onto the list at No. 10.

Welcome to the GPI Top 300

There were eight new names moving into the updated GPI Top 300 list, with Nicholas Palma the highest-ranked of the group after ascending from No. 337 to No. 244. Palma took 13th in that aforementioned Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open Championship won by Martin Kozlov, earning him the points to enable his upward move.

Biggest Gains

Sneaking in at No. 300 this week is Luke Brereton, and he earns the prize for the biggest gainer among all the GPI Top 300 after moving all of the way up from No. 498.

Brereton finished eighth in the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open Championship, Matt Berkey who jumped from No. 278 to No. 113 finished third, and winner Martin Kozlov elevated from No. 166 to No. 63, his highest-career GPI ranking.

Biggest Drops

Finally, looking only at players remaining in the Top 300, Marvin Rettenmaier suffered the most significant slip after dropping from No. 178 to No. 297.
