2023 APPT Manila Main Event Draws Second-Biggest Field in History

Level 13 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Florencio Campomanes

It was a busy day at the poker tables of the stunning Coral Room inside the Okada Manila complex and the PokerStars sponsored Asia-Pacific Poker Tour made history in the capital of the Philippines. The flagship 2023 APPT Manila Main Event shattered the PHP 20 million guarantee, which it had already surpassed on Day 1a, and nearly quadrupled the prize money up for grabs.

A new record was already on the horizon thanks to incredible 646 entries in the second of three starting days, which was then aided by more than 300 entries in the last-chance turbo heat 1c. Eventually, the new attendance record was missed by fewer than one dozen entries as an unofficial field of 1,354 emerged.

The PHP65,000 price tag of the marquee equals approximately $1,168 and drew a prize pool of PHP76,832,730 (~$1,381,101). A familiar face for the popular live poker tour ended atop the leaderboard for Day 1b as Florencio Campomanes claimed 423,500 to his name upon completion of 13 levels of 40 minutes each.

Back in 2019, the rising Pinoy poker pro came out on top of an 1,135 entry strong field here at Okada Manila after defeating Thijs Hilberts in heads-up. Filipino WSOP bracelet winner Mike Takayama finished third then and also advanced with a healthy stack of 247,500 today as well. One year prior, the APPT Manila Main Event took place at City of Dreams with a lower price tag of PHP55,000 and drew 1,364 total entries, setting the record attendance of the tour on the live poker circuit so far.

Day 1a: 395 entries, 91 advanced
Day 1b: 646 entries, 143 advanced
Day 1c: 313 entries, 109 advanced
Total Day 1: 1,354 entries, 343 return for Day 2

Andrej Nagy was also among the big stacks when the action wrapped up for the night and advanced with 351,500, while Christopher "BIGTIME" Mateo narrowly missed out on the podium of Day 1b with 325,500 in chips. Five of the top ten for this flight hail from the Philippines as Jason Magbanua (269,000) as well as Jeffrey Pardales (256,000) also had a strong showing as well.

It was an incredibly busy day for the PokerStars LIVE Manila team as all three areas in the Coral Room were used for the various tournaments and cash game action. More than 160 players were in their seats when the action kicked off at 1 p.m. local time and the field size kept on growing by the minute thanks to hundreds of later additions and the single re-entry option on each starting day.

While many local big names fell on the wayside on Day 1a, the big names came out on top this time. Eventual chip leader Campomanes had a decent stack last evening too before he gambled it away. This time, the 2018 APPT Manila Main Event champion consistently built up a wall of chips and jumped into second place overall, just one big blind behind Oleg Kaminski (426,000).

Other notables were not as fortunate as the likes of Martijn Gerrits, Bryan Huang, Yasuhiro Waki, Ting-Yi Tsai, Pete Chen, 2023 PokerStars Players Championship third-place finisher Max Menzel, Junnie Pamplona, Calvin Tan, and David Erquiaga all departed much earlier than they were hoping for.

The action never really slowed down throughout the 13 levels and many eye-catching all-in showdowns unfolded. Oliver Duran was involved in two of them, first hitting quads kings against a flopped nut flush and then turning the nut flush against the inferior flush of Richard Tolentino.

Archie Mariano couldn't hold with pocket kings on his first entry of the day either when Weixuan Wang flopped trips deuces in a three-bet pot. John Costiniano flopped quads deuces against Feras Elnatsha and was paid off for nearly three times the pot size but didn't advance to Day 2. Even earlier in level two, Joong Hoon Eum prevailed in a three-way all-in when cracking pocket aces and the flopped nut straight of Louis Bilodeau.

Many other spectacular showdowns blew by in a frantic day of live poker action in Asia as the trend of rising numbers for live events all over the world continues in 2023.

The survivors of all three starting days will return to their seats at 1 p.m. local time on Saturday, August 5, 2023. Recommencing blinds in level 14 will be 1,500-3,000 with a big blind ante of 3,000. The level duration increases to 60 minutes each and a 30-second shot clock comes in play as well.

On the penultimate tournament day, the money bubble is set to burst during the earlier stages before the race towards the final table continues. Whether or not the latter will be reached remains to be seen.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be back on the floor here in the Philippines to provide as many of the key hands as possible until a winner has been crowned at Okada Manila.

John David
John David

Sho Matsudo was all-in with a short stack of just 13,500 and received two callers in John David and Eduardo Ligon. The active players checked down the A?K?5?9?J? board and Matsudo's rail from Japan briefly celebrated when he turned over his K?Q?.

Ligon only had the inferior J?10? but David won it all with the A?3?.

Chierro De Leon
Chierro De Leon

Three ways to the 3?3?3? flop, Taekbeom Ko bet 3,000 and Rodolfo Cruz called. Chierro De Leon raised to 9,000 for Ko to then push for 28,000 total.

Cruz folded but De Leon called after some consideration.

Taekbeom Ko: 8?7?
Chierro De Leon: 8?8?

Nothing changed on the J? turn and Ko initially celebrated a chop on the 8? river before realising that De Leon had eights full of treys.

Ryan Platon
Ryan Platon

Jaejung Kim from under the gun and Ryan Platon on the button got their chips in after the 9?5?4? flop and they had nearly even stack sizes.

Jaejung Kim: J?J?
Ryan Platon: A?10?

The A? turn left Kim on the ropes and the 5? river ended his run.

"I was ahead all the time," Platon joked. He had covered his opponent by a mere one and a half big blinds.

Oliver Duran
Oliver Duran

Some 30,000 were in the middle to the Q?6?2?8?K? river when Richard Tolentino called all-in following a large bet by Oliver Duran. The latter tabled the A?J? for the nuts and Tolentino mucked his 9?7? before heading to the rail.

Duran leaped further near the top on the leaderboard, only trailing Siyoung Lee for the time being.

Field Size Surpasses 1,000 Entries

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Coral Room at Okada Manila
Coral Room at Okada Manila

At the start of level eight, the Day 1b field reached 608 entries with around 380 players remaining and this has boosted the overall attendance to 1,003 entries. This is significantly more than the 2022 edition but a new record for the PokerStars sponsored APPT Main Event in Manila is still a ways to go, as more than 1,324 entries would be required.

Wang Cracks Kings to Bust Mariano

Level 6 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
Archie Mariano
Archie Mariano

Archie Mariano opened to 1,500 in the cutoff and earned a call from the button. Weixuan Wang three-bet to 6,700 in the small blind and Kil Soo Kim flat-called out of the big blind, as did Mariano and the button.

The flop came 7?2?2? and Wang checked. Kim bet 17,000 for Mariano to shove for 39,300 total as Wang moved all-in over the top. Kim folded and exposed his Q?Q?.

Archie Mariano: K?K?
Weixuan Wang: A?2?

The J? turn and Q? river completed the board and Wang shot towards the top of the leaderboard.

Duran Knocks Out Tabucal in Spectacular Fashion

Level 6 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
Oliver Duran
Oliver Duran

By the time the all-in showdown unfolded, Ivan Tabucal and Oliver Duran had vaulted out of their chairs and both had the smart phones out to record what was unfolding.

Tabucal was the player at risk but his A?Q? had flopped the nut flush on K?6?3?. Duran's K?K? were good for the top set and he had plenty of outs. Nothing changed with the 9? turn but the K? river gave Duran quads as his opponent banged his fist on the table in disgust.

"Did you have aces?" Duran then asked Richard Tolentino, who had also been involved prior to the showdown. Tolentino nodded and Duran added "I put you on aces, that's why I just called the seven thousand ... with my stack it's otherwise all-in," he concluded.

Marcuss Liow
Marcuss Liow

Marcuss Liow had dropped to a short stack after losing a big pot early on during which he mentioned to have had pocket aces cracked. He managed to spin it back up only to get short again and then "took a gamble" in three-way action with 8?7? before the flop. Yosuke Takagi scored the knockout on a king-high runout with the A?A?.

Soon after, Takagi sent another opponent to the rail and joined six figures.

Perez Bell Doubles Through Alkhamisi

Level 5 : Blinds 200/500, 500 ante
Sam Alkhamisi
Sam Alkhamisi

Rebel Magdagasang squeezed to 4,300 preflop on the button and earned callers in John Perez Bell and Sam Alkhamisi. They headed to the A?7?4? flop on which it checked to the three-bettor. Magdagasang continued for 5,500 only for Perez Bell to check-shove. Alkhamisi reluctantly moved all-in and Magdagasang folded the A?K? face-up with a smirk on the face.

John Perez Bell: 9?5?
Sam Alkhamisi: 4?4?

The 2? turn and 10? river were blanks as Perez Bell doubled for 26,300, leaving Alkhamisi very short.
