Mads Smith Hansen Leads After Day 1b

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

Monday was time for Day 1b of the PokerStars.net European Poker Tour Vienna Main Event, which meant another day in paradise for poker players and poker fans from all over the world. The venue looked stunning again and everybody seemed excited as EPT President Edgar Stuchly announced the start of the tournament at noon.

If the Eureka Poker Tour was any indication of what was to come, Day 1b would be a lot busier than Day 1a. And so it was, as 560 players flocked to the Hofburg Palace tournament room. It once housed some of the most powerful people in European and Austrian history and currently serves as the official residence of the President of Austria. But the president shares his "Festsaal" with a bunch of poker players this week.

It was a feast of recognition today as many of the games greats entered the tournament. Two of those already registered for this summer's $1 million buy-in Big One for One Drop tournament were in attendance in Sam Trickett and Philipp Gruissem.

Also among the players to play today were Team PokerStars Pros Theo Jorgensen, Johnny Lodden, Jan Heitmann, Liv Boeree, Eugene Katchalov, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, and Max Lykov; former EPT winners Salvatore Bonavena, Mike McDonald, and Sandra Naujoks; and the renowned; PokerStars Team Online's Mickey Petersen; and the current EPT10 POY Leader Ole Schemion.

Throughout the day, there were big lay downs, total coolers, and big bluffs, and those hands happened in the first quarter of play.

Reigning PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event champion Dominik Panka was among those eliminated. Panka had a tough table from the get go with World Series of Poker and EPT final tablist Joep van den Bijgaart on his right and Schemion on his direct left. His table would get broken eventually, but that was little consolation. After getting short quite early, Panka lost his last chips to Van den Bijgaart in a preflop all-in situation with nines to ace-jack. A jack hit the flop, and that meant it was time for Panka to head for the exit.

Meanwhile Gus Hansen had as many swings in the tournament today as he does online. He ended up with a decent stack after eight levels of play, though, so it wasn't all downhill for "The Great Dane," who battled it out with Atik Miah more than once. First, he missed a bunch of outs in a big pot, but later won some back with kings a little later.

One table down was his teammate and online rival Viktor "Isildur1" Blom. The Swede was there right when the tournament started and looked at ease. Sometimes in the past, Blom has looked like he had some other place to be, but here in Vienna he wasn't going anywhere and seemed determined to do well. He did play a lot of pots, but most of them didn't get too out of control. It took a set-up hand for Blom to commit a lot of chips against EPT regular Jason Wheeler, but he flopped a straight against a set in that hand and managed to hold a good excuse to finally play a big pot. Needless to say, if a guy like Blom starts hitting sets, all the other players in the building should start to worry.

After eight levels of play, Mads Smith Hansen finished leading the way. The Danish player amassed 200,000 in chips in eight 75-minute levels of play. Hansen might lead, but don't forget about Igin Viacheslav (182,700), Artur Koren (154,900), Joni Jouhkimainen (154,400), and Sebastian Trisch (146,200). Former EPT Berlin winner Kevin MacPhee (128,800) and hometown hero Markus Golser (123,800) also gathered big stacks.

Tuesday awaits Day 2, where all the remaining players will start at 12 p.m. local time once again. Though it hasn't been announced officially yet, most likely Day 2 will know six 75-minute levels and no dinner break. The size of the prize pool and first-place prize awaits as players are allowed to enter until the start of Day 2.

PokerNews will again provide all the coverage you need from the first flop until the last river card, so be sure to check back again at noon for continued coverage of the 2014 EPT Vienna Main Event.

Wheeler's Chips are Smoked

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Jason Wheeler
Jason Wheeler

Jason Wheeler and Viktor "Isildur1" Blom each put in 2,600 preflop and took a flop of {9-Spades}{5-Spades}{6-Spades}. Blom was first to act and wasted little time in checking it over to Wheeler, who tossed out a bet of roughly 4,000. Blom then sprung to life with an all-in check-raise to 24,000 and Wheeler snap-called off for 23,000.

Blom: {7-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Wheeler: {6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}

Neither player had a spade, but the flop still managed to hit them both. Blom flopped the nut straight, while Wheeler hit a set. The latter player needed the board to pair in order to stay alive, and if that were to happen it'd essentially mean the swede's tournament life as he'd be left with just 1,000 in chips.

The {2-Spades} turn made it so another spade on the river would result in a chop, but that didn't happen as the {Q-Hearts} peeled off. Wheeler failed to pair the board and his night came to an end here in Level 7.

Kings For Hansen

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Gus Hansen
Gus Hansen

On a {4-Spades}{8-Clubs}{10-Hearts} flop and Atik Miah from the UK checked it to Gus Hansen on thu button. "The Great Dane" bet out 1,500 in all but two of the small denomination chips he had. Miah called rather quickly.

The {7-Diamonds} on the turn made Miah check once again. Hansen moved all in for 5,050 and Miah was thinking about it. Hansen expressed to the table how he was happy his opponent didn't insta-call. Hansen kept on smiling and stated he expected his opponent not to have jack-nine or five-six now after the tanking.

Maybe the talking got to Miah, or he just didn't buy Hansen's constant aggression, and he called. Holding {Q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} Miah needed some help though as Hansen was the proud owner of {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}.

The {A-Diamonds} on the river was a blank and Hansen doubled to a little under 20,000.

Van den Bijgaart Busts Panka

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Dominik Panka
Dominik Panka

Joep van den Bijgaart raised it up to 700 from the button and the small blind quickly released his hand. PokerStars Sponsored Player Dominik Panka in the big blind had other plans though. With about 9,000 left he made it 1,700. Van den Bijgaart wasted no time shoving all in and Panka called just as quickly.

Joep van den Bijgaart: {A-Hearts}{J-Clubs}
Dominik Panka: {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}

The flop came jack high and that was all there was to it: {j-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}. Panka got up from the table, shook hands with Schemion and Van den Bijgaart and said his goodbyes. Ciao Panka, see you in the High Roller?

Austria's All-Time Money Winner Looking for More

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Josef Klinger
Josef Klinger

Do you know who tops the Austria all-time money list? It's not Niki Jedlicka, who is currently 10th on the list with $652,890 in live lifetime earnings (though that'll go up when he and Eugene Katchalov finished their heads-up battle in the Eureka High Roller tomorrow); nor is it Thomas Muhlocker, who sits fourth with $1,121,159.

The man who actually tops the list is Josef "Pepe" Klinger, who has $1,759,013 in lifetime earnings.

The vast majority of that, $1,331,274 to be exact, came courtesy of his runner-up finish to Nicolas Chouity in the EPT6 Grand Final. However, he's also notched some other impressive scores including second in the 3,000 Vienna Spring Poker Festival for $129,219; a win in the 2003 Vienna Spring Festival 2,000 NLHE for $86,105; first in the 1999 Vienna Spring Festival for $80,013; and a victory in the 2004 Austrian Classics 1,000 No Limit Hold'em for $27,996.

Klinger is looking to add even more to his rsum, though he faces an uphill battle as he is sitting with just 11,700.

An Orbit w/ FTP Flipout Freeroll Winner Feliz Schulze

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Flipout Champ Felix Schulze
Flipout Champ Felix Schulze

Yesterday, Full Tilt Poker held a live Flipout freeroll inside Viennas stunning imperial Hofburg Palace. The promotion saw total entries peak at 184, though there were only 81 spots available. A dozen of those spots were reserved for the likes of Full Tilt Poker Professionals Gus Hansen and Viktor Blom; Full Tilt Poker Ambassadors Dermot Blain, Hana Soljan, Roberta Cezarescu and Andras Nemeth; Team PokerStars Pros Jan Heitmann and Marcel Luske; and Team PokerStars Online's Dale Philip, Mickey Petersen, Marc-Andre Ladouceur and Matthias Brandner.

The remaining 69 seats were determined by a random draw, and among those to win a spot were Kevin MacPhee, David Vamplew, and Steve ODwyer. All 81 players were competing for the first-place prize of an EPT Vienna Main Event seat worth 5,300.

According to FTP: "The first stage of the live Flipout freeroll saw players gather for an exciting sweat as three tables flipped at the same time (each player was automatically all in on the first hand) to produce three winners. This happened three times amidst much drama and fun C producing nine players in total, with a variety of online and live tickets on the line."

In the end, Felix Schulze beat Full Tilt Poker Tour Ambassador Andras Nemeth to win the seat; as such, the German is now in the Day 1b field. Here's a look at the FTP Flipout Freeroll results:

PlacePlayerPrize
1Felix Schulze5,300 EPT Main Event ticket
2Andras Nemeth550 ticket
3Holger Hubner330 ticket
4Vlad Lache220 ticket
5Richard Kapun220 ticket
6Hakan Can120 ticket
7Benjamin Mertens120 ticket
8David Vamplew120 ticket
9Thomas Putzenlechner120 ticket

We recently caught up with Schulze over at Table 22, where he is sitting quietly with headphones on. Schulze had no choice but to gamble it up in the freeroll, but he appears to be taking a more cautious approach in the Main Event. That was evidenced when we spent an entire orbit watching the freeroll winner.

Hand #1 (Big Blind): Schulze began the orbit with 30,400 and ended up folding this hand after a player in early position opened for 400 and a middle-position player three-bet to 925.

Hand #2 (Small Blind): A player in middle position raised to 350, the cutoff called, and Schulze folded when it was his turn to act.

Hand #3 (Button): A middle-position player opened for 350 and Schulze folded.

Hand #4 (Cutoff): The hijack opened for 425 and Schulze folded.

Hand #5 (Hijack): Action folded to Schulze and he did the same.

Hand #6 (Middle Position): Schulze opened for 450 and received a call from the player in the small blind. Both players checked the {10-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} flop, and then did the same on the {7-Clubs} turn. Action went check-check for a third time when the {5-Clubs} completed the board n the river, and the small blind tabled the {a-Spades}{j-Spades}. Schulze showed the inferior {a-Hearts}{9-Spades} and watched the pot pushed to his opponent.

Hand #7 (Early Position): The under-the-gun player folded and Schulze did the same.

Hand #8 (Under the Gun): Schulze folded.

Not much happening for Schulze, who seems content to grind the day away.

For Jason Wheeler's Fans

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Jason Wheeler
Jason Wheeler

"The fans back home will like that one," Jason Wheeler smiled, after we wrote up an interesting hand in which he folded a big one. We caught a hand from the start that played out as following.

Wheeler raised to 275 and Konstantin Puchkov called from the button after which Vizsnyiczai Zsolt three-bet from the small blind to 1,700. The American pro tanked for a bit before making the call, and Puchkov followed suit.

The flop brought out {4-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} and Zsolt checked to Wheeler who quickly bet 2,225 and Puchkov let go of his hand. Zsolt grabbed some more chips before he fired 6,200 into the pot.

Wheeler went into the tank for a bit before he started talking to his opponent.

"What country are you from?" Wheeler kindly asked, as Zsolt remained quiet.

"What's your favorite color?" Wheeler added.

"Are you for the annexation of Crimea by Russia?" Wheeler continued, all while Zsolt remained silent.

After a brief pause Wheeler said, "I don't like to fold to Russians," as he threw his {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades} face up into the muck. Zsolt was kind enough to show {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades} as he raked in the pot. Wheeler made an impressive lay down, but his geographical assumption wasn't as good because Zsolt hails from Hungary.
