Lakhdari Leads, Greenwood in Second After Day 1 of €10,000 EPT High Roller

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Omar Lakhdari
Omar Lakhdari

The opening day in one of the last major events of the 2019 PokerStars EPT Prague festival has come to an end after a full day of poker. The €10,000 EPT High Roller kicked off today with a strong showing of 245 entries being recorded. Topping the star-studded field and the 117 survivors at the end of the day was Omar Lakhdari who bagged up a stack of 330,000 chips.

Lakhdari emerged as one of the chip leaders in the middle of the day and held on throughout to bag up the biggest stack. Lakhdari has mostly made a living off playing in smaller stakes tournaments but enjoys testing himself against some of the best in larger events from time to time. He will be looking for a deep run here to surpass his largest career score of just over $100,000 in order to add to his already impressive $1.7 million in career earnings.

Following not far off in the distance is a man who is very well known not only in the poker world but especially in the high-roller fields. Sam Greenwood made a late rally in the last couple of levels to finish with a stack of 304,000, good enough for second on the leaderboard. Greenwood is coming off a victory in the €25,000 Single-Day High Roller and another strong finish in this event would put a bow on 2019 for the Canadian.

Action from Day 1

The cards went in the air with roughly 30 players taking their seats after a slight delay. That number continued to grow throughout the 10 levels on Day 1 with registration open the entire day. By the day's end, a total of 245 entries were tallied with a single re-entry option available for those that were eliminated.

Some of the early notables to take a seat included Stephen Chidwick, Adrian Mateos, Timothy Adams, Jimmy Guerrero, Conor Beresford, Ben Heath, and Parker Talbot. In fact, all of those players happened to land at the same table. It was deemed the table of death in the early going until some of them busted and some were moved away. Those that finished the day on that table were Adams (93,000), Mateos (29,500), and Beresford (104,500).

Jun Obara jumped out to an early lead before the dinner break rolled around and it was all thanks to Laszlo Bujtas. The two tangled in a massive pot that saw Obara eliminate Bujtas only to have the Hungarian re-enter and draw the same table. Soon after, Obara scooped another healthy pot off Bujtas to climb well over 200,000 chips and sit at the top of the leaderboard. Obara put it in cruise control from there and finished the day with 282,500 chips.

When the players returned from their dinner break, it was Michael Soyza who started to make a push for the top stack. He found himself on the right side of a cooler when he woke up with pocket aces against Steven van Zadelhoff's pocket kings. All of the chips didn't go in until the river but Soyza still managed to get the maximum value. He also picked off a bluff from Anatoly Filatov shortly after but fell short of the lead with 211,500 chips.

Michael Soyza had a strong Day 1

Some other big stacks to keep an eye on heading to Day 2 include Dimitar Danchev (264,000), Pavel Plesuv (251,000), Ben Heath (222,500), Uri Reichenstein (221,000), and Ludovic Geilich (202,000). The list could go on and on with the quality that this field has produced and it will be a tight race to get into the money when the action resumes on Day 2.

The day wasn't so kind to everyone including last year's Main Event winner Paul Michaelis. Although the German just captured another title last night, it wasn't meant to be today as Michaelis burned through both of his bullets. Some others that came up empty-handed include Chidwick, Bujtas, Ramon Colillas, Niklas Astedt, Juha Helppi, William Kassouf, and Kenny Hallaert.

Players will still have the opportunity to enter prior to the start of Day 2. The cards will go back in the air at 12:30 p.m. local time with the blinds resuming at 1,000/2,000 and a 2,000 big blind ante. Another 10 levels are on the schedule for tomorrow with the champion being crowned on Day 3.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be back to bring you all of the live updates from the tournament floor.

Gerald Karlic was under the gun and got in an all-in preflop situation against Paul Michaelis, who was on his direct left. Michaelis was the one at risk.

Paul Michaelis: {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
Gerald Karlic: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}

Michaelis was unable to find a third jack as the board came {7-Clubs}{4-Spades}{9-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} to result in the second time Michaelis was eliminated from the tournament for the day, ending the 2018 EPT Prague Main Event champion's run at becoming the final High Roller champion of 2019.

Tedeschi Sends Chidwick to the Rail

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Stephen Chidwick
Stephen Chidwick

Stephen Chidwick raised it up from the hijack and Paul Tedeschi stuck in a three-bet on the button. The blinds folded and Chidwick called to see a flop of {a-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{7-Spades}. Chidwick checked to Tedeschi who bet 6,400 and Chidwick called.

The turn was the {4-Hearts} and both players checked to the {8-Diamonds} on the river. Chidwick checked again and Tedeschi announced all in, putting Chidwick to the test for his last 34,500 chips. Chidwick used up two of his tim extensions before making the call.

Tedeschi turned over {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts} and his kicker was good enough to defeat Chidwick's {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs} and send him to the rail.

Bicknell Cracks ElkY's Cowboys

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Bertrand Grospellier
Bertrand Grospellier

There was 18,000 in the middle in a blind-on-blind battle between Bertrand Grospellier and Kristen Bicknell with action on the turn on a board of {6-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}. Grospellier checked the small blind over to Bicknell and she made a bet of 10,000. Grospellier check-raised all in for about three times more and Bicknell quickly dropped in the chips she was holding to make the call.

Bertrand Grospellier: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Kristen Bicknell: {6-Spades}{5-Diamonds}

Grospellier found his kings in need of some assistance when all the chips got in as Bicknell had turned two pair to pull ahead. The river {q-Diamonds} provided no such relief and he wished the table a good game before getting up from his seat.

Soyza Downs van Zadelhoff

Level 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Michael Soyza
Michael Soyza

There was a little over 40,000 in the middle already in what was said to be a four-bet pot. On a flop of {q-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, Steven van Zadelhoff checked from the big blind and Michael Soyza bet 13,000 on his left. Van Zadelhoff called and the {8-Spades} landed on the turn.

The action checked to Soyza again who fired out another 22,000 and van Zadelhoff still called. The river was the {5-Hearts} and van Zadelhoff checked for the third time. Soyza moved all but 1,000 chips into the middle but it was still enough to cover van Zadelhoff's stack of just under 50,000.

It didn't take long but van Zadelhoff made the call and the cards were tabled. Soyza flipped over {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs} and van Zadelhoff had one pair lower with {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}.

Jun Obara
Jun Obara

Laszlo Bujtas opened to 1,500 from under the gun and was called by a player in the cutoff. Jun Obara re-raised to 6,800 in the big blind and both players called. The flop came {j-Hearts}{8-Spades}{3-Spades} and the action checked around to the {2-Diamonds} on the turn.

Obara checked again and Bujtas bet 6,000 which got the cutoff to fold but Obara still called. The river was the {5-Diamonds} and Obara checked for the third time. Bujtas splashed in a bet of 15,000 and Obara quickly called. Bujtas tabled {q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a pair of eights but Obara held {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} to scoop another pot.

Adrian Mateos

The turn brought the {7-Diamonds} and both players checked to the {9-Diamonds} on the river. Mateos used a time extension and then slid in a stack of chips to put Heath to the test for his remaining 43,000 and change. Heath also used a couple of time extensions but decided to let his hand go.

Schwippert Waits for the River

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante
Jan-Eric Schwippert
Jan-Eric Schwippert

There was a raise to 1,000 from middle position and Jan-Eric Schwippert was the only player to call from the button. The monotone flop of {a-Spades}{9-Spades}{8-Spades} hit the felt and Schwippert was faced with a bet of 1,200 which he called.

The turn was the {j-Clubs} and Schwippert was looking at another bet of 3,000. He still called and the {8-Clubs} paired the board on the river. Faced with a third barrel of 8,000, Schwippert used a time extension before dropping in a raise to 20,000. His opponent thought for a moment but decided to send his cards to the muck.

A Couple Fun Hands

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante
Uri Reichenstein
Uri Reichenstein

Hand #1:

Uri Reichenstein opened the action with a raise to 1,000 in the cutoff and received calls from both Jiayu Ruan in the small blind and Tom Kunze, who defended his big blind. All three players checked the flop {4-Spades}{10-Spades}{3-Clubs}.

The turn came {j-Clubs} and Ruan led out with a bet of 1,800. Both Kunze and Reichenstein called. The river fell {j-Spades} and Ruan checked to put action onto Kunze, who fired out a bet of 8,000. Reichenstein went into the tank, using one of his time extensions and a handful of seconds before tossing in a call. Ruan quickly called behind.

All three players tabled their hands at almost exactly the same time. Kunze showed {q-Spades}{j-Hearts} and Reichenstein {q-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} to both have the same three-of-a-kind hand. However, neither was good to the full house with {4-Clubs}{4-Hearts} that Ruan turned over. Another player at the table mentioned about Reichenstein and Kunze chopping, resulting in some laughter as both Reichenstein and Kunze stated in near unison, "No chop this time!"

Hand #2:

On the following hand, under the gun raised to 900 and Reichenstein three-bet to 3,000 in the hijack. The original opener asked to see Reichenstein's stack and then four-bet to 9,700. Reichenstein thought for a couple of moments and then shoved the last of his chips into the middle.

The under-the-gun player asked for a count and Reichenstein's stack was totaled to be 26,200 The player went into the tank, using one time extension as he made the decision to let his hand go to earn Reichenstein the pot with his preflop five-bet shove.
