Do an Interview With PokerNews, Scoop a Pot

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante

Mike Sexton, who was kind enough to do an interview with PokerNews' Sarah Grant during the last break, just scooped a pot and knocked out Larry Etherington When we reached the table, the board was complete - {4-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{4-Hearts} - and Filippi showed {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}. Sexton's {a-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{10-Spades} was better, Etherington mucked, and Sexton scooped the pot.

Looking Ahead

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante

We're just doing some number crunching over here, and the results are... well, not so good.

Our event is scheduled to run for another three levels tonight, at which point we're supposed to be down to (or very close to) the final table. That's not so much going to happen. The field size was comparable last year, and Day 2 finished with 23 players still in the hunt. They played it out on Day 3, but Sammy Farha didn't get to hoist the bracelet until breakfast time the following morning as the sun was already rising bright in the desert sky.

This year, there is a hard stop in place that will keep us from playing on into the mid-morning hours. All that really means is this event is a near-lock to bleed over into a fourth day on Thursday.

Mercier Scooped in Back-to-Back Pots

Jason Mercier is non too happy.
Jason Mercier is non too happy.

Bricking and getting scooped is pretty tilting, but just ask Jason Mercier how it feels to be scooped in consecutive hands.

In the first, he and David Steicke got three bets in preflop. The flop fell {9-Clubs}{8-Spades}{4-Diamonds}, Steicke led out, and Mercier called. Steicke put his last bet in after the {4-Clubs} turned, Mercier insta-called, and the hands were opened.

Steicke: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}{k-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}
Mercier: {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}{7-Clubs}{q-Hearts}

Mercier was open-ended with a flush draw, but the {2-Diamonds} on the river was a big, red, brick.

The very next hand, Mercier opened from early position, and Alessio Isaia re-raised from the small blind. Mercier called. Isaia led after the dealer fanned {8-Spades}{6-Spades}{a-Diamonds}, Mercier raised, and Isaia called. Isaia slowed down, check-calling after the {6-Diamonds} turned, and both players checked after the {3-Clubs} was dealt on the river.

Mercier sighed as he tabled {a-Spades}{3-Spades}{4-Spades}{q-Diamonds} for a lowly pair of aces and an eight-six low, and Isaia tabled {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{k-Clubs} for a better pair of aces and the nut-low. The dealer was having a hard time reading the hands however, and sat idle for a moment or two.

"As soon as you figure this out, you can take my money," Mercier sighed. "I appreciate you trying to give some back though."

Back to back scoops have Mercier hurting, he's down to 82,000 chips.
