After three full days of poker, another champion has been crowned at the 2013 World Series of Poker. That player is Jared Hamby, who took down Event #40 $1,500 No-Limit Holdem by overcoming a big chip deficit heads up. Hamby beat out 2,160 other poker players on route to winning his first gold bracelet, and $525,272 for first place.

22 players came back today, and it did not take long to get to the mothership. Along the way, Peter Hengsakul sucked out on Griffin Benger in a huge hand on the river that saw Hengsakul take 25% of the chips in play with 12 players to go.

Allen Cunningham was eliminated on the official final table bubble, and the eliminations didnt slow down once the players got to the main stage. David Nicholson was the first person eliminated on Hand #14, when his {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} couldnt catch against the {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds} of Matt Berkey. Fred Berger then went out in 8th, and Richard Dubini shortly followed him out, after being crippled in a huge hand against Brazilian Joao Dorneles Neto.

Matt Berkey had been grinded down to just 325,000 when he shoved with {K-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}. Jared Hamby looked him up with {k-Hearts}{j-Clubs}, and after Hamby flopped trip jacks to send Berkey packing. Neto went out next when his flopped top pair was no good against the flopped middle set of Hengsakul.

Nicolas Fierro was next to go after losing a huge pot to Jared Hamby to lose most of his chips. His {ac]{5-Spades} was no match for the {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs} of Allan Vrooman, and he bowed out in 4th. Speaking of Vrooman, he was next to go three handed after losing a race to Hengsakul to get us to heads up between Hengsakul and Hamby.

Hamby started the heads up at a severe chip disadvantage, and he had to get lucky twice to stay in the tournament. In the first hand, Hamby got it in good with {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}, and after Hengsakul paired the flop, he rivered a better pair. On the second one, Hamby got it in with top pair against the bottom two pair of Hengsakul, only to counterfeit him with running deuces. On the final hand, it was king-ten again that hit for Hamby, as he outran the pocket fives of Hengsakul.

Lynn Gilmartin was table-side to speak our champion straight after his win:

Congratulations again to Jared Hamby, the latest champion of the 2013 WSOP. Tune in tomorrow to see who will take home the next gold bracelet! Until then, so long from the Rio!

Peter Hengsakul Eliminated in 2nd Place ($325,780); Jared Hamby Wins!

Level 29 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
Peter Hengsakul - 2nd place
Peter Hengsakul - 2nd place

Hand #140: Peter Hengsakul raised to 160,000 and Jared Hamby moved all in. After re-checking his hand, Hengsakul made the call for his 1,800,000-chip stack.

Hamby: {K-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Hengsakul: {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}

As the crowd rose to their feet, the dealer spread a {4-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} flop to keep Hengsakul in the lead, but it would be {K-Clubs} on the turn that would see Hamby's rail erupt with cheers.

With Hengsakul needing to spike a two-outer to stay alive, the {7-Hearts} on the river would unfortunately not be it as he was sent to the rail in 2nd place for a $325,780 payday while Hamby went rushing to his rail for congratulatory hugs.

"You avenged me! You avenged me!" screamed one of Hamby's railbirds in Griffin Benger in reference to the aces against kings beat he took at the hands of Hengsakul to bust in 12th place.
