The first of two starting flights of the Colossus attracted 4,217 entrants to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. Some 632 of those starters made it into the money places, and only 484 players were left at the end of Day 1a.

The Day 1a chip leader is none other than Hiep Tran who crammed 1,308,000 chips into his overnight bag.Eight other players finished their flight with seven-figure stacks, including Hogyun Kang (1,297,000), bracelet winner Vincas Tamasauskas (1,241,000), Martin Ryan (1,178,000), and Charbel Kanterjian (1,118,000).

Jeff Platt (582,000), fresh from a fourth-place finish in the $1,000 Double Stack event, looks set for another deep run. Platt finished with an above-average stack.

Plenty of well-known players are among the Day 1a survivors. They include former WSOP champions Thi Truong (737,000), Kevin Song (689,000), Barbara Enright (411,000), Chris Wallace (309,000), Gary Benson (241,000), Pete Chen (231,000), and former Main Event champion Robert Varkonyi (175,000).
