The Two Failed Bluffs in One Week that Cost Doug Polk $700k

Level 34 : Blinds 200,000/400,000, 400,000 ante
Doug Polk

Chris Moneymaker had the Bluff of the Century in 2003. This past week, Doug Polk had perhaps the Failed Bluff of the Century.

On Sunday, heads-up for a bracelet, Polk bluffed off a significant portion of his stack at the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) less than one week after his infamous bluff attempt that didn't get through on Hustler Casino Live's $1 million game.

In both instances, the Upswing Poker founder had a busted draw and attempted to use aggression to coerce his opponents into folding somewhat marginal holdings in massive pots. Both times, however, his efforts were unsuccessful and quite costly.

Jonathan Dimmig

A three-way pot was down to two once Joseph Altomonte bet 1,200,000 after the A?Q?Q? flop. Jonathan Dimmig then moved all in, with Altomonte making the call and the cards turned up.

Jonathan Dimmig: Q?6?2?2?
Joseph Altomonte: K?K?Q?8?

Both players had trips, but Altomonte's kicker left him in the lead. The 7? turn and 3? river changed nothing, as Dimmig was eliminated in 10th place.

Kevin Rand raised to 900,000 before the flop and Jesse Yaginuma defended the big blind.

Jesse Yaginuma: Q?9?6?5?
Kevin Rand: A?A?5?2?

Yaginuma flopped a wrap, but the J? turn and Q? river were no help as he was sent to the payout desk in 11th place.

Alfred Atamian

Joseph Altomonte opened to 1,000,000 from early position and called when Alfred Atamian moved all-in to his left for around 3,200,000 chips.

Alfred Atamian: A?K?K?8?
Joseph Altomonte: A?Q?J?6?

Atamian's pair of kings was in front, but the 7?Q?9? flop gave Altomonte plenty of outs. The 7? turn completed Altomonte's flush, while the 9? river changed nothing to send Atamian to the rail in 12th place.

Stuart McMahen
Stuart McMahen

Kevin Rand raised to 800,000 under the gun and the action folded to Stuart McMahen in the big blind who made the call.

The dealer fanned a flop of 10?8?4? and McMahen took the lead, pushing out a bet of 2,200,000. Rand went into the tank for about a minute eying up McMahen's 2,100,000 behind and eventually raised the pot, which meant it was all-in to call for McMahen. McMahen made the call and both players tabled their hands.

Stuart McMahen: 7?6?4?2?
Kevin Rand: A?10?5?4?

Rand flopped two pair and improved to a full house as the board ran out 10? on the turn and 3? on the river, eliminating McMahen in 13th place.
