Positioned on opposite sides of the room are the respective cheering sections for Eastgate and Demidov-- Eastgate's clad in black t-shirts that say "It's in the Stars" and Demidov's supporters wearing a mishmash of red capes, fur hats, and ornate, brocaded caftans.
Action should be underway in a few minutes.
Lindgren came out on the stage to a rousing ovation.
"Wow, this is awesome," he said. "I can't believe all you people are here to watch poker."
Speaking about the Player of the Year Award, Lindgren said, "I feel truly honored. Some really great players have won this award." He then added, " You guys get to watch some great players play heads-up tonight. One more thing -- Doyle Brunson told me to tell them that there is a cash game tonight after they're done."
A custom Harley-Davidson motorcycle awaits Lindgren backstage.
According to the official schedule, the Player of the Year presentation will take place ten minutes from now, at 9:55pm local time. Erick Lindgren won Player of the Year this year and will be presented with a custom, engraved Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
A few minutes after that, Ivan Demidov and Peter Eastgate will unbag and stack their chips. When they're ready to go, Jeffrey Pollack will welcome us all back before turning the microphone over to legendary emcee Michael Buffer for the player introductions.
If everything stays on schedule, cards will be in the air at 10:04pm with just less than nine minutes left on the clock in Level 37.
Tonight, a new name will be added to that list and the fates of two young guns, Peter Eastgate and Ivan Demidov, hang in the balance. Two men enter, but only one will walk away from the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event with the money, the fame and the title of World Champion.
No matter how things unfold, poker history will be written this evening. Should Eastgate win, at 22 years old he would become the youngest player ever to win the Main Event, an accolade currently owned by 11-time bracelet winner and 1989 Main Event Champion Phil Hellmuth, Jr. The young Dane enters the heads-up match as its chip leader with 80,300,000 and if last night's crowd is indicative of what we can expect tonight, Eastgate will have the upper hand with fan support, courtesy of good friend Jesper Hougaard and his band of "Ooba, Ooba" hooligans.
On the other side of the fence sits 27-year-old Russian up-and-comer Ivan Demidov, who has already accomplished what many might argue is one of the greatest feats in tournament poker history. Last month, Demidov made the final table of the WSOP-Europe Main Event, ultimately finishing in third place, earning a ￡334,850 payday. In doing so, Demidov became the first player in history to reach the final table of both the WSOP and WSOP-E Main Events. What's more, he did so in the same year! A win tonight would likely set the bar so high that no one will ever even come close to matching this feat. Demidov has plenty of ammunition to get the job done, as he returns to the felt with 56,600,000 in chips.
