2013 World Poker Tour Legends of Poker Day 2: Heimiller Leads as Money Bubble Bursts 0001

The 2013 World Poker Tour Legends of Poker Main Event continued on Sunday with Day 2 action from the Bicycle Casino in California. The day began with the 259 players who survived the three Day 1 flights, plus another 47 who entered before registration closed Sunday morning.

With a total field of 716 in this event, the prize pool amounted to $2,430,820. The eventual winner will take home $613,355 when the tournament comes to a close on Wednesday, and the top 72 spots would pay out a minimum of $7,050.

As it turned out, 73 players would get a paycheck as two players were eliminated on the money bubble late Sunday night. That left 71 players bagging up chips at the end of Day 2, and leading the way was Dan Heimiller with 1,099,000. Not far behind was Phil Laak, who will enter Day 3 with 830,000.

Day 2 began with several notables still alive, but most of them hit the wayside. Among the casualties were Allen Cunningham, David Sands, and Paul Volpe, as well as former WPT champs Gavin Griffin, Freddy Deeb, Barry Greenstein, Andy Frankenberger, Scott Clements, Prahlad Friedman, Scotty Nguyen, Shawn Buchanan and Matt Salsberg.

Salsberg was one of the last eliminations of the night. But the honor of bubble boy was split by Jake Schindler and Ashton Holmes during hand-for-hand play, with Schindler exiting first after a wild hand against Dan Heimiller. According to the WPT Live Updates team, Schindler min-raised preflop to 12,000 form the button and Heimiller called form the big blind. The flop rolled out A?10?7? and Heimiller checked to Schindler who fired 21,000 into the pot. Heimiller responded with a raise to 56,000, and Schindler re-popped it to 115,000. Heimiller called, and the 9? hit the turn. Both players opted to check, and the 9? peeled off on the river. Heimiller moved all in, putting Schindler to a decision for his remaining 276,000 chips. Schindler called and discovered the bad news when Heimiller flipped over Q?7? for two pair, and Schindler was forced to show his K?5? for king-high.

Moments later, Holmes was sent packing by David Tuchman when his A?K? was unable to outrun Tuchman's J?J?. Since Holmes and Schindler were eliminated on the same hand, they each took home $3,525.

The big pot against Schindler pushed Heimiller into the chip lead ahead of Richard Munro. Also near the top of the leaderboard is Phil Laak, who went on a major rush toward the end of the night to finish third in chips. He'll be joined by notables Greg Mueller (328,000), Faraz Jaka (236,000), Ali Eslami (179,000) and Joe Serock (98,000), among many others, when play resumes on Monday.

Day 3 will begin at 1 p.m. PT, and the plan is to play down to the final 18. Stay tuned to PokerNews.com as we bring you daily reports from the World Poker Tour Legends of Poker at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles.
