WCOOP 2020 Day 5: Andras "probirs" Nemeth Wins First WCOOP Title

On the fifth day of the 2020 PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP), Andras "probirs" Nemeth crossed one of the few missing accolades off his list by winning a WCOOP title. The former #1 ranked tournament player in the world on PocketFives, Nemeth got the proverbial monkey off his back in WCOOP-15-H: $530+R NLHE [8-Max], where he outlasted a 294-player field to win $79,655.

In addition, two major tournaments kicked off which are both covered in the PokerNews Live Reporting section, where Artur "mararthur1" Martirosian claimed an overnight chip lead in WCOOP-16-H: $10,300 NLHE [8-Max, Progressive KO, High Roller].

Artur "mararthur1" Martirosian Leads Final 10 Players in 2020 WCOOP-16-H: $10,300 NLHE [8-Max, Progressive KO, High Roller]

In just over seven hours of play, a field of 95 entries in WCOOP-16-H: $10,300 NLHE [8-Max, Progressive KO, High Roller] has been whittled down to the final 10 players, who have all locked up a portion of the $1,000,000 guaranteed prize pool. The second five-figure prize pool of the WCOOP narrowly missed out on meeting the guarantee and the usual suspects gave it a shot.

When all was done and dusted, a double knockout let the bubble burst and reduced the field to just 10 hopefuls instead of the scheduled 11 and Artur "mararthur1" Martirosian bagged up a comfortable lead. The Russian, who has stormed into the live and online poker High Roller scene with numerous big cashes, already min-cashed WCOOP-10-H: $10,300 NLHE [8-Max, High Roller] and seems poised to add a first WCOOP title to his poker resume.

Martirosian claimed 6,255,647 to his name and $26,250 in accumulated bounty prizes tie second-placed Rodrigo "Seijistar" Seiji (4,100,954) who was responsible for the conclusion of the day. A late surge propelled Thomas "MarToMchat" Boivin to a stack of 2,563,690 with Brunno "botteonpoker" Botteon (2,424,456) and Ole "wizowizo" Schemion (2,391,932) close behind.

The remaining finalists include "Kurtkaare" (1,734,322), "LeslieGroves" (1,410,345), Joao "Naza114" Vieira (1,355,841), Adrian "Amadi_017" Mateos (901,808) and David "dpeters17" Peters (611,005). Peters is the only player without any accumulated bounty prizes thus far and will have 15 big blinds at his disposal.

Yurasov in the Top After Day 1 of WCOOP-16-M: $1,050 NLHE Thursday Thrill SE

Day 1 of WCOOP-16-M: $1,050 NLHE Thursday Thrill Special Edition was on offer for players today to give them another shot at a share of the $,1000,000 guaranteed prize pool. In the end, 1,048 entries flocked to the freezeout tournament creating a prize pool of $,1048,000 with 127 players getting paid aside from any collected bounties throughout the day.

By the time the bubble dust had settled, 108 players have claimed their spot for Day 2 with Matheus "ThugWaffle" Resende at the top of the counts with 3,470,298 in chips. Resende is followed by Diego "Mr.Bittar" Bittar (2,814,266), Dmitry "yurasov1990" Yurasov (2,743,266), Pavels "Rigapols81" Spirins (2,668,574), and Tyler "Wonderboy222" Goatcher (2,256,106) in the top five.

When the players return for Day 2 on Friday, September 4, at 7:05 p.m. CEST, they will finish the last few minutes of Level 21 which has a small blind of 10,000, a big blind of 20,000, and a running ante of 2,500. All players have already secured the min-cash of $1,152 but they will all have their sights set for that first-place prize of $73,667 and more bounties along the way.

A whopping fifteen champions were crowned on Thursday night. In addition to Nemeth, the following players all won a WCOOP title including two notable high rollers.

The first one was Arsenii "josef_shvejk" Karmatckii, who defeated a 452-player field in WCOOP-13-h: $1,050 NLHE [Midweek Freeze] for $72,759, while Dutchman Jordi "prot0" Urlings, playing from Malta, won WCOOP-17-H: $1,050 6+ (Short Deck) Hold'em [6-Max] for $26,752.

In WCOOP-15-H, Andras "probirs" Nemeth defeated Brazil's Will "hellzito" Arruda heads-up for his first title and $79,655. Arruda received $58,586 for finishing runner-up, while Argentina's Damian "pampa27" Salas was third for $43,064. Gianluca "Tankanza" Speranza, Niklas "Lena900" Astedt, and Sergei "Futti18" Koliakov also made the final table.

Nothing is scheduled for September 4! As a novelty this year, the WCOOP will take a rest day on Friday, allowing players to charge up for the big weekend ahead.

Two side events, PL Fusion and Seven Card Stud, are held at 6:05 p.m. UTC and 7:05 p.m. UTC, respectively, for those that still crave WCOOP-related action.
