WPT GTO Trainer Hands of the Week: Large 3-Betting from the Big Blind

Today youll be playing as the Big Blind in a tournament. After the Cutoff open raises to 2.5BBs, you reraise to 12.5BBs. Reraising to 4x or 5x the previous total raise amount from the Big Blind can be the best play when facing very wide opening hand ranges.

One dramatic effect of this larger preflop reraise size is that the SPR on the flop will be much lower. With stacks this shallow relative to the pot and ranges somewhat narrow, the ideal c-betting size will often be ? pot.

However, you wont be c-betting with every hand all the time. You should be checking on some flops when you miss entirely and that flop hits your opponents range particularly well. In addition, hands such as 2nd pair will often be in a checking range.

If your c-bet gets called, youll often want to fire again on the turn when an Ace, King, or Queen thats an overcard to the board falls. This includes both when those cards hit your hand and when they do not. This will keep you balanced with your turn second bullets.

When you check the turn, you should sometimes have strong hands as well. Good candidates for checking would be when you have the board essentially locked (you have all the desirable cards on a particular board).

Also, sometimes your c-bet bluffs will pick up a pair much worse than top pair. These are often candidates for a check-call line on the turn.
